....."can poor handlers still be good judges keeping in mind that if so, it blows one or more of these out of the water

Good judges are born regards:D;-)

john
I think no one that makes less than 50,000 per year should ever be allowed to judge a all age stake. I could lower that to 40,000 for minor stakes. You could even split the incomes as necessary say one poor guy only make 49,000 but his co-judge makes 51,000 (or prefably much more) thier combined incomes would just get by.
It would be easy to regulate just have the judges submit a W-2 prior to judging in fact they could be posted in the trial catalogs.

So John giving your continued premise that judging is poor what are you doing about it ? You know all that is wrong with the sport, so can we have the dates of the upcoming seminars you are giving? Can you list your creds or accomplishments that allow you to post frequently your position. I am not going to waste the time to look up but can you list tour upcoming judging assignments?

Bitching in the Gallery, the tailgate party and the internet does not make one a expert regards.....

Lets be clear, 50k net. They also shouldn't be inflating their net income by including monetary perks like insurance, health clubs, company cars etc. We want honets to goodness 50k net.

How about the trust fund people that show no income (obviously not me) but there are some VERY well to do people that show little to no income (great accountants/lawyers)...they can finance some third world countries, since their parent was trading sealskins with the eskimos way back when...would you exclude them from judging...;)

I don't know the answer to your question, but I do know that sitting in the judges chair will make you a better handler and the more you judge the better you will be. You will see good and bad handling as you sit in the chair and focus intently on each and every dog and handler as they run. These are things that are harder to record from the distance of the gallery with it's attendant distractions.

John
If judging makes you a better handler and being a good handler makes you a good judge and being a good judge gets you asked to judge more trials and more judging makes you a better handler and being a better judge gets you more judging assignments and more judging makes you a better handler and being a better handler makes you a better judge and being a good judge gets you asked to judge more and judging makes you a better handler and being a better handler makes you a better judge.... Wait Who is on First base? I don't know? Third Base? ;-)

I have access to a computer, what else do I need.

No steve no more vetting, I am tired of listing my creds when anyone asks, dont ask for them, Answer the question.

If you think that this post is strictly about poor judging, It appears that cognative reading 101 should be in your imediate future.

What it is about is the validity of the first 4 statments. they are :

There is a school of thought in our Retriever community that suggests that there is a correlation between good judging and success in AA FT's.

There is another that states that good handlers are born with "IT" and while you can improve on your handling acumen , you will never be "GOOD"

There is still another that offers that it takes success in FT's at or above the level you are judging in order to be a good judge of them.

And finally to be successfull in today's all age stakes takes being a good handler.

what a joke this argument is.

is every football coach a former great player?

every boxing ref a former champ?

do i have to be an accomplished musician to know good music when i hear it?

we could go on and on.....
David, You realize that it is not me who is saying that one must have "successfully" run a dog at or above the level being judged .

In the case of that one and the other three others I posted, some would have you believe they are the concensus
