Becky-

Don't you dare go beating yourself up over this. Nobody takes better care of their animals (& every person you run across) than you. Cletus is going to be fine because you & Scotty dropped everything & got him the care he needs.

Hope he's home tomorrow & having you wanting to pinch his head off!

Thanks, y'all. We really do need those prayers. Cletus isn't doing well at all and the vets are afraid he might lose his foot. If he makes it through this I think I'll pinch his head off for upsetting us so bad.
Thanks again.
Take Care,
Becky

Oh Becky, so sorry to hear this. I was so hoping when I saw your name that you were telling us Cletus was coming home. I know you will make the very best choices for him. He can still have a wonderful life life even as a 3 footed friend. Many enjoy perfectly normal lives that way, and if it stops the poison and/or infection from spreading, go for it. Big hugs and back pats from me and Indy. (poor dog, I kept him on a pretty short leash as it was, from now on I think I'm going to carry him to go potty in the yard).

More good wishes for Cletus coming from the north.

Hang in there Cletus. Becky needs you.

Thank you all so much for your prayers and concern. I’m pretty sure Cletus is the only dog in Randolph County to have people from California praying over him.
There really isn’t any change, other than Scotty looks more pitiful every day and I’m not far behind. I never thought I’d see the day when I missed Cletus's obnoxious yodeling (I don’t care what his papers say, I’m pretty sure he’s half Blue Tick hound) but I’d give just about anything to hear him right now, much less to hug him.
His foot and leg are still a swollen horrible mess. Depending on which vet we talk to, he is still in danger of losing his foot to he’s going to lose the tissue between two of his toes to he is going to lose a toe or two. But Scotty says he does feel better and he’s eating like a horse. He’s still getting fluids, two different antibiotics, and steroids.
For those of you who are interested in the intricacies of snake bites, we think he may have been bitten by a cottonmouth rather than a rattler. Scotty’s nephew ran over a three footer in the same area today when he was mowing. That would explain why the rattlesnake vaccine wasn’t effective. Plus, I’ve been told cottonmouths are the worst as far as harmful bacteria.
Anyway, thanks again so much.
Take Care,
Becky

Becky, we are still here praying for you and Cletus. I do not know if it applies here, but I have read (on the internet and we know how reliable that is) that the rattlesnake vacine is not very effective on the eastern diamondback, the one we have here too.

I do know that I almost lost my first lab to a copperhead bite, not from the venom, but the infection that set up. He was bitten on the nose, and the infection came very close to his brain, from the bite wound not the venom. I can well believe what you are saying about a cotton mouth.

All we can do now is hope for the best for you both. All our care, love and concern,

Carol

Thanks for asking! I figured y'all were sick of Cletus by now.
Thank goodness we heard positive news for the first time this morning. The swelling is starting to go down a little and he's starting to use his paw. They even removed his I.V. catheter!
We're not out of the woods yet - the vets tell us there is still a danger in a blood clot breaking loose and creating havoc but it was just so good to hear he's improved.
Thank you all again.
A grateful step mother regards,
Becky

That's great news Becky! :D Give Cletus a pat on the head for me!

So glad to hear Cletus is improving. And no, we aren't sick of hearing about him. He sounds like a real character. Hopefully, after recuperating, he'll get to being his same ole self again. Maybe he needs to wear snake-proof boots and body armor when he returns home, though  . Keep the forum updated on his progress. We're all anxious to know how his recovery is going.

Thoughts and prayers from Kansas, Dorothy, and Toto,
G

Thanks Y'all!
We went to see Cletus this morning and Scotty tried his best to convince the docs to let him come home. They thought about it and I think if he had insisted they would have given in. But I'm glad he's still over there.
Even though this is our third snake bite this is the first one with such deep tissue damage. I know it is going to freak us out when it starts sloughing off (it is already soooo GROSS looking). I'd rather he be in the hands of people who know what it is supposed to look like.
Anyway, it looks like Friday is going to CLETUS HOMECOMING DAY at LOVETT FARMS! We can't wait!
And thanks again!
Take Care,
Becky

Umm... ..let me guess- you're already baking Bubba Biscuits & picking out Hoss' most festive bandana!

Glad to hear it Becky! :)
