I have a 3 month old black lab. We work everyday with obedience and playing retrieving games and marks. I know it is way too early to use a stick to reinforce the sit and heel, but at what age do you do this. He does well with sit and so so on heel. Is there an age or is it just when the dog understands sit and heel?

Second question. The other day when went to a creek and I was throwing out some bumpers and he would dive into the water and bring them back. The water was over his head. He had only been in the water a few times. I was amazed!!!!!! It was like he could not get enough of it. The next day I took him back to do the same and it was like I had a different dog. He was scared of the water. What is the deal? Did I do something wrong?

Sounds like a great pup. I would be concentrating on stricktly OB for right now. Nothing wrong with a few retrieves once in awhile. OB is the foundation for what he will learn over the next coming years. Sit and come are the most important commands this dog should know. It may save his life one day. The use of a heeling stick can be used when he comes to walking heel and he veers a little give him a firm tap on the rump and when you stop at heel give him a firm swat on the rump and say sit. Do this for a month and then put down the heeling stick and watch what happens.
Make sure come command is to the point there is no question what you want, there are many ways to help them along. Pick up a copy of Jackie Mertans sound beginnings.
As far as the water issue. Put your waders on and join him in the shallows building confidence in him. Make it playful all about the fun. Remember he's still a puppy, let him be one. My .02
