Has anyone got one of the New Remington Versa Max shotguns? Thinking of getting a new gun I have read reviews about them both bad and good but looking for more infromation before I buy one. I was thinking I would want a 26" Camo if one can be found in my area.

I haven't heard anything bad about them, other than one review I saw where the guy complained that such an expensive gun didn't come in a nicer box. They are suppose to cycle flawlessly and are softer shooting than the interia driven guns. They point and handle nicely and strike the perfect balance between too heavy and too light. Thinking about retiring my 23 year old 11-87 and the Versa Max will probably be my next shotgun.

I have a camo version of the Versa max that I won from a local DU banquet. I used it for two seasons of duck hunting and from my gun that I used ( 11-87 premier ) its worlds apart. smoother shooting , faster cycleing and the flexablity of going from 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 inch shells very benificial. There is no need to hesitate to take that last shot on the high bird after downing the one that cupped over your decoy spead. However this is just my opinoin , and I'm sure that there is someone out there that will not share it. Just a simple duck hunter shareing his experience with another hunter. Hope this helps you , John

IMO, Rem/Brown are so far behind Berretta/Benelli they will never catch up. American shot guns suffer greatly in fit, finish, balance and reliability.
This may be true "Fit and Finish"

But I'll take a 870 Wingmaster or an 1100 in freezing rain and snow any day over any Italian gun. :)

JMO....

Very true statement but I am biased owning 3 Wingmasters, 1 of which is my flyer gun. Why you can no longer buy they off the shelf proves to me the Am shot gun mfg's have lost the battle. While we rarely get anything below 32 on the coast I have had the bolt on my sbe 1 freeze before and only release by firing. I believe all the shot gun mfg's are creating more and more gimics to sell guns Am and Itlians.

I can add nothing to that statement!!!

Well said

I couldn't understand why Remington released the 1187 (in 1987) much heavier etc.etc.

The Italians on the other hand were producing nice looking and FITTING guns mostly in the auto/gas guns.

Very nice Italian wood too :)

Benelli's are not worth the money. The Rem 11-87 is a good reliable auto. For 3.5" it's hard to beat a Browning Gold.

I also own two Wingmasters.

I have a versa max there have been a few issues but none that really limit the shotgun completely they are more so break in issues the recoil "rod" got stuck once and we had to tap the bolt forward a few times and took it apart and saw it was worn on the top of the rod and then when loading 3 1/2 in shells can be a bit of a pain as the lower chamber guard restricts the ability to load longer shells fast. After I broke it in no real issues so far just remember to clean it every few boxes of shells and you are golden in the blind - all that said I wouldn't trade my benelli nova for anything - been through hell and back and still shoots every time

I 2nd the nova....it may be a pump but it does go from 2 3/4 to 3 1/2. I have never had problems with it. A buddy has it to and he has completely dropped it into the river where he picked it up and dumped water out the barrel like you would see in a cartoon. Still went bang

I do not own one, I have more guns that I can use as I type this. BUT, I have a few friends that have them and absolutely rave about them. I know these guys personally and I know they put their guns through the mill during hunting season. To me, if they rave about them then the gun has something going for it and if I were in the market for a new gun, I would NOT hesitate getting a Versa Max.

The Browning Gold that I experienced was, in the words of Si, a "hunk of junk" That thing jammed more in each hunt than my Benelli ever has! good riddance!

I sold shotguns for years, remington quality fit and finish are awful compared to other high end guns. The versa max is a decent gun, only actually looked over one, I was not impressed by the fit and finish, the guy who owned it said it was dependable, but I don't think he shot it more than 20 times at that time.

Older Remi's were at least well made and dependable, they just never felt good to me fit wise and seemed clumsy.

If it has to be broke in how good is it? Most hunter will not go through a case per year, my sbe has avg 2 cases for 20 yrs and hasn't been cleaned in 2 yrs. Rem swing like a 4x4 post while the 2 "B" guns are pure poetry in motion. In the end it's what your happy with so shoot what turns your own crank.
