Supposedly the manufacturers recommendations are to fed them in a way that encourages the dog to chew them. Maybe it is a scapegoat to relieve them of responsibility. I don't mean to paint anyone in a negative light, but we are living in a world of corporate greed and corruption, lol, jk.

Unless a dog is MDR1, you have to be on crack to overdose a dog on Ivermectin. I still can't believe that people buy dog-specific products. Just flushing money down the drain.
You feed a raw diet to your dogs? Nothing wrong if that's your choice for feed and you know what your doing. It's just your statement seems pretty broad brushed.

Your message is clear enough and persuasive enough for me to try to do it myself. I do try to keep my vet happy and stick to their program. My vet is really economical with things compared to what I hear other people paying. With one dog I guess it would save about $100.00 a year. I would want to give the hookworm / pinworm medicine also.

Ivermectin kills or prevents both hookworms and pinworms. In fact, that is what humans are given for those worms, Stromectol. Most vets use the liquid Ivermectin they keep for mange cases. It is too expensive unless you have a full kennel because so little is used the bottle would expire.

It is off-label use in dogs for those worms. It wont work on tapes I don't think.

I use http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/durvet-ivermectin-paste-187-608-g

One turn of the dial, once a month.

The pyrantel pamoate that is also in Heartguard is supposed to be for round worms and hookworms. So, you put it on your finger and the dog eats it that way? I've got a tractor supply.

We are talking about heart worm prevention not diet. BTW I don't feed raw.
But that wasn't what you said in your post, that you were referring to heartworm products only. You said you dont know why folks buy only dog specific products. That would suggest the rest of us are wasting our money on a wide range of products. Thanks for clarifying.

Oh crap....just saw this....Now I got to sift through 18 different turds in the morning......any recommendation on a technique? Jim
