In the early years retriever handlers did not use whistles. Whistles were used by the herding breed handlers.
Someone why back when, decided that "WE" could use them effectively and started to do so but the rest of the evolution of their use is buried in the dust of history. Sooooo....
Fast forward to 2010...Is the use of a whistle optional when handling while under judgement at an AKC retriever field event ? Or can you just say or holler sit ?
