Looking to give my pups second vaccination (9weeks) and my older dogs their yearly booster. I see they now make a 10 way so I figured the more the merrier. Talk to a vet and she said the lepto in the 10 way sometimes causes reactions. What do you guys give for your pups that are very active and in unfamiliar areas as pups. 5 way, 6 way, 7 way, 10 way, etc. So many choices its too confusing . Thanks in advance

I give all my Lepto vaccinations separately, and not until after 3 months. I also don't give Corona.

Thanks for your reply. So how many Lepto vaccinations do you give and at what intervals? Why do you not give the Corona? Thanks again

Same as Nancy, Lepto separate. I give Vanguard Plus 5 as the series of puppy shots at 6, 9, 12, 15 weeks. Rabies at 16 weeks. Lepto after rabies but not at the same time because they are the two most likely to cause reactions.

Lepto should be given in the spring, for pups it is two vaccinations two weeks apart. Then an annual booster in the spring after that. It is short-acting, so it only lasts about 6 months. You need to cover spring through first frost. When I can get it, I give Vangard Lepto 4 but I have used a different brand since I moved to WA because that is what my veterinarian carries.

I cannot find the lepto seperate. Where do you buy your vaccinations? Foster and Smith online?

Ask your vet to order it. It comes in a pack of 25 doses

I'm probably the odd man out, but I follow Dr Jean Dodds recommendations for puppy and adult vaccinations. I basically do DHP at 8 and 16 weeks followed by Rabies at 6 months of age. Never give Lepto or any other non-core vaccinations. I titer test the puppies at about 8 months to insure immunity, and then titer test about every 3 years after that. Have not had one come back with anything other than showing immunity. I truly believe over vaccination can cause multiple immune problems, some of which don't show up for years down the road. I have had one dog that had four seizures in response to a rabies vaccine. Seizures started six weeks after the vaccine and had one about every week for a month. Then no more seizures in her lifetime (also no more vaccines!) Everyone has to do what they feel is right for their own dogs but overfacing young immune systems by throwing everything at them at the same time is just asking for trouble IMHO.

Strongly agree, and follow this protocol.

It is prudent to point out that Jean Dodds views on vaccinations are far from those of mainstream veterinary medicine. However, choosing whether to follow her recommendations is always your decision.

You can't titer Lepto and what Jean Dodd said is it is easily treated. It's not. The one I had died from kidney failure in less than a month. Raccoons are one vector so if you have Raccoons even in city parks, beware.

If you bring your dog to wet areas where wildlife occur, you should definitely vaccinate for lepto. One of my dogs is from a litter of puppies that got lepto at about 4 weeks (too young for vaccinations; mom probably picked it up from raccoon or skunk urine in the backyard). They were in a suburban Buffalo, New York area. Lepto? Easily treated? The vet assumed lepto before the positive test results came back and started antibiotics on all the puppies right away, but several died.

Jean Dodds is not a vet; just someone with a dedicated fanatical following.
Actually she is, but peer-recognized specialist in immunology, she is not.

I stand corrected. And I deleted my post because I came to my senses and went with my usual policy of staying out of any vaccination discussion. :)

Rats, mice, and moles are important primary hosts—but a wide range of other mammals including dogs, deer, rabbits, hedgehogs, cows, sheep, swine, raccoons, opossums, skunks. The organism, a spirochete, survives in a moist environment. There have been reported cases of human leptospirosis contracted from the tops of aluminum beverage cans contaminated with rat urine.

You really ought to return to the discussion, as no matter what your opinion, at least someone in the far reaches of Google will agree with you. Maybe, as in J.D.'s case, many will agree with you. :D

Lepto is making a big comeback. But instead of the typical hunting dog, it is now mostly the suburban and urban dog. I consider it an important preventative measure. I do give it separately from the other vaccines in older dogs. Pups get Lepto (DHLPP) at the last two vaccines at 14 and 18 weeks of age for me. I start DHP at 6 weeks and vaccinate every 4 weeks till 18 weeks. Rabies at 18 weeks. Important the Lepto vaccine has all 4 types.

Also there has not been a lot of studies done to show titer equals protection. For some diseases, cell mediated immunity is needed and that cannot be measured.

We had a local case in which a dachshund who lived in a 7th floor urban apartment and NEVER left the floor, developed lepto. The dog urinated, defecated, and ate on the astroturf on the balcony. It was postulated after finding feces on another balcony that a raccoon was climbing onto the balcony and urinating on the astroturf.

Wow, I did not realize it was this complex. I am now more confused than I was prior to my beginning post. Thanks for everyones reply, obviously there is no wrong or right answer. I guess I will discuss with my vet and go with his recommendation. I may run some of these comments by him to see what he says. Thanks again.

What ever your schedule is and I know people swear by their own vaccination schedules. PLEASE vaccinate for Lepto. I have experienced Lepto with a very promising young dog years ago. (9 derby points in 4 trials) totally gone in little over 3 weeks. Nothing my vet could do. It was heartbreaking and sad.
