Any one know of any good references or books to read on whelping or have any tips? I have no clue what to do, just need to get prepared.
Just had an ultrasound done today and we saw 5. It was her 27th day since the breeding.
Is there a good chance ther are are more than 5 pups ?
Thanks, Brad

Canine Reproduction: The Breeder's Guide by Phyllis Holst. I don't breed any more-had a Newfy bitch I bred years ago and one Golden litter in 1996, so not sure if there's a newer book that's more popular. I know this book was very helpful to me and of the 6 litters I had over the years-I never lost a pup. Lots of good advice in this book.

When I started breeding, I bought the book that Miriam just suggested and I googled as much information about whelping as I could find.
http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/articles.html This link was very helpful for alot of information.
another one was http://www.labbies.com/whelp.htm

I read everything I could find, I also talked to other friends who had whelped litters.
Good Luck....ask lots of questions.

(You may have more than 5, I have heard that x-rays done just before whelping is more accurate for counts). I did x-rays about a week before she was due...they were within 1 or 2 pups.

The book Miriam suggested is excellent.

Hopefully this is a typo? Canine gestation is approx 63 days.

The book Mirriam mentions is probably the best if it is still in print.

For my litter, the ultrasound showed 6 pups. She had 10.

I've got the Holst but the book I refer to on whelping day is The Whelping and Rearing of Puppies: A Complete and Practical Guide by Muriel P. Lee. It's spiral bound so it lays flat for hands-free reading on whelping day and it is a step 1, step 2, step 3 type book.

Puppies are usually seen on ultra-sound until a bit later than 27 days. You must have one sharp vet. Usually on ultra-sound it's impossible to count them precisely. What sex are they?<g>

Cant tale yet.

Yes, in answer to your question. There could be a couple more hiding behind the ones you see. Here is a link to a reproduction specialist in Ohio who is very well known. He has a video that I think is $32.

Ultrasounds are done 21-25 days. You can x-ray a week prior to count better if you need to. I'm waiting now for ultrasound date for my girl. Best of luck!! :p

May want to look at using whelpwise. I've heard it's worth every penny, and you'll have someone on the phone with you...

Yes... I used Whelpwise and they were fabulous. Without them and the equipment they send to you -- I would never have known the pups were in distress and we ended up having to do a c-section. Great folks to work with and they are there 24/7 to help you. :D
