My (first dog as an adult) chocolate lab is 19 months old and is very obedient in sit, stay, heel, and triple marks. He also delivers bumpers and birds in the field to hand. My problem is bringing birds to hand in boat blind. The dog will stay and retrieve on command, but comes back to marsh away from boat and brings bird through unnecessary thick grass and drops/losses bird several times before getting to boat. Dog has weak hold on bumpers and birds. Alot of times on land he plucks doves before getting enough grip to pick up bird. I have been doing several short sessions a day the last two days of forcing bumper in mouth and carrying in mouth with extended sitting holds and delivering bumper to another spot with very rapid success. He is a very smart dog and a soft dog (cowers when I sneeze). He picks up new commands with little correction. My question is whether or not to start the ear pinch forced fetchs. I personally feel it may scare and set him back, but I also want my dog to continue to develop and perform at his peak.
