I can do a lot in my training but the timing and ability to read a dog during FF is not my game. We did one dog ( older hunting dog) at 3. He was first dog and had injures as a youngest but we didnt know better. He was primarily to be a hunting dog and we didnt know better. Our newer dog we did when he was ready as a puppy. there is a big difference and the puppy still loves to play fetch game to pick up bumpers at end of training. I dont want picking up a bird or bumper to be a question at any distance whether hunting or hunt test. So the question is very valid--what are your goals

I was not sure about the ff myself and after getting advice from all these guys here, along with reading alot I decided i would proceed. Turned out l live near Dan Hosford and went out to see him. I got his dvds and they were quite clear about proceedure and easy to understand,and he has been good enough to have me out one a week for training. all in all I found the steps clear and made it possible for me to train my own dog. We made it through and are into memory blinds and some hunting.If you are close enough to a pro go see them if you can. Good Luck

I tried with DVD with my older dog but realized I was over my head. Now I understand more so when we got the puppy and he came back from breeder I could reinforce correctly.

as many times as needed. whenever a new dog trainer needs advice. if you have no questions about it yourself then there is no need to open the thread. if you do not want to help the person there is no need to open the thread. if you never hope to, like panning for Gold, find a unique nugget of wisdom tucked away. there is no need to open the thread.

Thank you Ken. That was very well said and as a relatively new member, I know I have, and will probably continue to ask seemingly dumb questions on occasion. Sometimes I get useful responses, and sometimes sniping. Don't particularly like the sniping when it is on this forum, but you take the bad to get to the good. (POTUS is a whole other case, snipe season is always open there, and that's just fine)

About FF, as long as someone's not telling me FF is awful, I'll entertain the question. The older dominance approach is a lot less popular than it used to be (the wolf analogy hasn't held up well). Not to stir up controversy on that, just to say, it's good, esp. with soft dogs, to ask questions, to worry some about their shutting down.

So often it bears repeating, ya gotta adjust the 'force' to the dog. It can take the mildest of ear pinches to teach a soft dog to fetch reliably. Provided the trainer takes a 'can-do' approach (but keeps things upbeat & is willing to backtrack). Jim Spencer's chapter in his old Marshes & Meadows book does that, it's already been recommended here. I too like his book alot.

The poster is young. Me, I wish I'd somehow found room for my forcing table when I moved to a smaller house. In other words, be sure to think ahead about the logistics of the FF situation. The dog is facing away from the person holding it. The dog is sitting while this person holds the collar (usually an every day flat collar) and applies the ear pressure. An assistant sits in a chair facing them holding the dumbbell and places it in dog's mouth as it opens and removes it on drop/out command.

There may be variations on this method but this is what I have seen.

After reading Alec's post I have decided my aversion to FF and all it's mysteries are well founded. I didn't play Rugby Football and Cricket as a young man to willingly sacrifice The Family Jewels as an old one. I have as they say grown attached.

There used to be a Woman Police Constable in Lichfield nicknamed "Iron Drawers" but the handle may not have been connected with retriever training.

I have not had a chance to review the DVDs you have mentioned (had to be out of state a couple of days to work) but I will most likely continue enforcing the hold exercises and work on getting a dog ladder and training out of the boat once I am certain he has a good solid hold. Worked on water retrieves out of the boat days before this FF issue and he would only do three retrieves each session during the day and drop the bird right before the boat a couple of the times. He did not like entering the boat from the water.
I will be back in the state Wednesday morning and continue training. I hope to get back up with Amy Dahl and shedule sometime with her sometime this week as well. Thanks again for all the replies. And I did look through past forum topic but did not see any FF threads and The sheer number of threads was quite overwhelming in itself.
