I've looked through some older threads but was a little confused by some of the responses.

Looking for whistle recommendations for hunting and hunt test work. I had been using a Gonia Special Orange and the same whistle with the black shroud.

Is the Gonia Special Clear (without the pea) a better option? What are some other choices?

With Ken on that one too! Use the orange Answer whistle without the pea.

I should have added - currently the Answer for running shorter for hunt tests, the Green Monster for field trials.

I started our with Fox40, but found that my pup would not respond as much when the distance was stretched a little bit. I ended up going with the Dallesasse Blue Ribbon whistle. No reason for buying this other than it was on sale. It is a little bit big, but I still like it.

I use a Megawhistle (Gonia with the black shroud) almost all the time. I like to carry two whistles to the line at HT and also while hunting. You never know when one will stop working or start making a strange sound. Always have a pealess for very cold days.

In very windy conditions some folks use a Green Monster or the Dallesasse. I've used the Dallesasse but it started giving me inconsistent sounds so I trashed it. I might try another Dallesasse but at the price they go for???

I switched to this one last year and like it, I do keep a spare because they all seem to begin making a different tone sooner or later. The ones with the pea did it a lot more often though.

I also oedered one of the pink Dallesasee's, mainly because of my wife and 3 daughters, but I use it quite a bit also and like it.

I also get a lot of greif at the HT for wearing a pink whistle!!!!!

I still mainly use the Mega Answer.

It will be a while before I am working out beyond 150 (new pup). I was thinking of trying the Gonia special clear, one with the shroud and one without, then cutting the pea out of them.

Duk, that Answer is the one I am looking at, thanks! Was also going to order a non shrouded special clear for hunting.

I do exactly what you are thinking of. I use the shrouded variety for trialing/training. For my upland and duck call lanyard, I have the insert whistle itself only.

You can do this with the Answer or with the Dallessasse. Both of the "guts" whistles are available non-shrouded.

If you can't find the clear Gonia without a pea, or if it is cheaper to buy with a pea, you can remove the little cork in about 2 minutes with a utility knife blade or other tool...no biggie.

I personally found that I had to go to the Dallessasse for All Age blind work. I know that many more successful than I are getting good performance with the Answer. So it may be more the operator than the equipment.

Much easier to start with the whistle you plan to use when the dog is an adult. Some dogs have a hard time transitioning to another whistle. So if you (or anyone) plans to work at distances beyond what you start a pup on, don't wait. Go ahead & begin using the whistle you plan to use when full distances are in play.

Where can one pick-up a Dallessasse non-shrouded, I'd Like to get one, the Big Blue is a little too big for the duck blind, I like the tone, and I wish they'd make a short shroud for closer work.

no matter which whistle you choose, use some personal ear protection too, seen way too many pros and old timers that are darn near as deaf as some of the dogs they train..I bought a pack of the ear plugs with a plastic cord between them so I always have an extra in the truck or training jacket..I use custom fitted plugs when I shoot
