I have a 5 and a half month old puppy who whines like crazy. He used to bark a lot, when he was in a crate or kennel. He's been wearing a bark collar for that. Sometimes its as if that doesn't even phase him when he's shocked. He'll jump in the side by side and whine. He'll whine the whole ride. He's a great pup but the whining is driving me nuts. How do you guys correct this?

Just brought my pup home last night and I am already working on the pup not whining. If she starts to whine in the crate I say quite. If she continues I tap the crate and say quite. She is just a baby and she was just separated from the other pups so I don’t yell or smack the kennel very hard. Do not let a pup continue to do anything you don’t want it to do the rest of its life!

I assume he is in the crate so my approach would be to pull over and lean over the seat or whatever you have to do to reach the kennel and wait for the whining to start. Dog whines smack the kennel and say quite. Repeat and smack the kennel a little harder if he doesn’t stop. If it continues I would go home and put him in the kennel and grab a beer and sit down beside the kennel and start over. Key is let not it go until you get angry. You have to stay calm but firm. Depending on how long this has been going on it might take a lot of time but if you don’t stop it now you will fight it for the rest of the dogs life.

Bark collars will stop a dog from barking but can and does start the whining problem.

Find someone who really knows how to teach obedience, stop everything, crate or on a leash with a human - do quality obedience at all times.

Long sits - like 15 - 30 minutes. Long downs - 30 - 45 minutes.

He needs to learn to relax and that nothing is necessarily going to happen in the next 30 seconds that he should be excited about.

Whining typically comes from anxiety with dogs. Try to think of what the dog is whining about and see if you can help. I had a dog that whined for years when sitting in a pit in Arkansas. For a season or two, I would yell at him or nick him on a light setting. One cold January day, I looked over and saw his nut sack was always sitting on cold steel. My next trip out, I brought a plastic thick mat like we use at the line when dog training. Boom, never whined again. Point is, try to figure out what she is whining about and see if you can help fix it.
