I just got a remmington silent dog whistle and am wondering a few things about it. How far away should i expect my dog to hear it, or should i just use a regular whistle? I am thinking about using 1 long blow to come, 2 short blows to sit, and one short to whoa..... any ideas or advise i could use? What is the best way to start training him? I have a 9 month old lab, I got him about a month ago and I am working on basic obedience and he is doing pretty good we are now just perfecting everything. I am trying to make him a duck dog.

Do you and your dog a favor , ditch the silent whistle and get a Roy Gonia whistle, orange or clear, pea or no pea, makes very little difference at this point. you can always go to a mega whistle or green monster later. Most trainers use a short one whistle blast as their sit/stop/stay sound. if you can get your dog to stop on the whistle at any time it is kind of like the core of all other commands and gets you started on the correct path with your dog....have fun...

I would recommend not using a silent whistle. The distance is poor and in thinking about being fair to the dog you want to make sure they can hear it. I might suggest an easier whistle sequence as well.

1. Single blast for sit. - This is much easier to chain to a sit command during your obedience lessons. You really want to break down the task to its simplest forms.

2 Two or more blasts for come. - You can encourage the dog to come back using the more whistle commands this way.

There is some very good training material out there, in fact just today a thread contained some of those suggestions.

Have fun training your pup....
