Yep...it all started with baseball....in the bullpen.

Nowadays, a poor kid who wants to see a ballgame can't afford a soda pop, let alone admission to a game!
So true.

Unfortunately, folks just don't get it. If they would stop going to the games, ticket prices and concessions would have to go down.

But the bleacher bums still show up.

Maybe less attendance with more margin is more profitable.

Then, you always have corporate sponsorship forcing the little man out.

Looks like one more spot on the wall.

Who wants it regards,

Just throwing this out there but could it be that the reason SRS uses rubber ducks is because there biggest sponsor is in the rubber duck making business? Not everything is a grand conspiracy.

Farmboy, the last I heard Louisburg in September (club event not televised) will be using real ducks.

Yea I'm sure that's the reason! I invite you to go by any FT/HT on Sunday afternoon and pickup all the birds that were used so they are not wasted!

Nice invite but pretty much all clubs either sell or keep their "wasted" birds to be used again and again until they fall apart.........

Which makes it an even bigger pile of steaming funk.

So Flyway HIghway murders off brazillians of waterfowl but VS wouldn't be OK with using live birds?

It's about money and NOTHING else. SRS doesn't feel like messing with all the logistics around acquiring/shooting/disposing of live birds so the neat answer-

Rubber chickens for all and screw the consequences.

Money changes everything regards

Bubba

Made that argument many times before Bubba. Hey I have even seen seal hunting on vs. Talk about getting the anit's panties in a wad.....

Maybe they don't use the real birds since they are wasted.

Without a doubt the most stupid comment ever posted on RTF.

I have suspected you are an anti troll for some time now

I don't think you get it. Since when have Americans stopped doing something because we might get scared of what "Peta" or whatever thinks? By being cowards about it, they win.
On the contrary, I DO get it. People and organizations get vilified every day in the court of public opinion for conduct that is not illegal just immoral or unethical in the eyes of others. We, as hunters, are in the minority now and that's a fact. I never said to be ashamed of what we do or stop doing it, only that we have to understand that many others would find it abhorrent. We're not talking about a hunting show where the birds are shot and at least used for food. Showing all of America hundreds of birds getting killed in field trials would just be bad P.R. for the AKC, retriever training, and retriever owners.

Or it could be a teaching moment;-)
People still eat chicken at KFC.......

What about all those hunting shows where they use bait deer hunting and folks sit in heated box blinds waiting for deer to come eat on the newest deer bait. I think it gives non hunters a bad perception of what real hunting is but now it is accepted on TV cause they do it all the time... So why not shoot flyers? I think they don't because of the bunny huggers and because it is way easier. I really do not watch it cause really I see it as going to a rodeo and not being entered pretty damn boring. I do support it because it is a dog game.

So your telling me after they fall apart they are used for consumption?? That is what I am trying to bring up.

Awe shucks bullgator TROLL sorry buddy I have am a very avid trapper and live pigeon shooter at heart. My piont is anytime the ANTI's can bring us down they will and we as sportsman have to be always thinking one step ahead. Look at what has happened to trapping and live pigeon shooting here in the US, fox hunting in England that is just a tidbit.
If you would visit here www.ussportsmen.org I am very actively involved with them and www.furtakersofamerica.com
In a few months there will be wonderful live pigeon shoot down in your neck of the woods if you would like an invite please PM I would be more than happy to share a nice cigar and Scotch with you.

Just in case we meet you have an idea what I look like.

Ok I'll take you off the anti list......

still stupid remark that the birds are wasted. Consumption is not the only use for birds or animals. Sounds good, but based on that I guess you are all for eating yotes, nutrinias, minks..... Training birds are not wasted birds

Hell Ya love that whitetail!! Sweet im so ready for hunting season!!!! What were you all talking about again? Thats kinda like shooting a flyer after seeing all those rubber duckys!!!!

As we reach the 10 year anniversary of televised retriever competition the debate of live vs rubber ducks continues. No new information or arguments. Both real bird and rubber duck competitions have survived as separate games.
Each game has its own merits, goals and supporters with a few crossovers and that probably won't change either.

Tim

I am not saying I eat what I trap nor do I have the desire for a Raccoon roast. Live pigeon shoot birds are tossed also. I don't care what happens to those birds. I am trying to bring up what the rest of the worlds perception is of us. I have a computer networking business, one of my clients is a large PR firm. Motto is "If you can see it with them they can sell it" Anit's have a very canny way of brining things up and trying to make us eat crow. That is what I am trying to state.

So maybe I didn't express myself best from brain to keyboard, so can you please make it the second dumbest thing on here. I get my feelings hurt easy. :p

Dat right.

Buzzards gotta eat, same as worms. :) Outlaw Josey Wales

I also think the Avery sponsorship plays some role in the use of ABTs.

True. They started on ESPN long before Avery made ABT's. Don't think that Dokens provided that much support then

ESPN=ABC=Disney=Made for TV

VS=killing everything that walks, flys, swims, or slithers....except SRS which kills rubber ducks= ?????

Excellent post, Tim, but you can't try to inject reason into this argument. It's the same as British vs. American Labs, Democrats vs. Republicans or FOP vs. Dapper Dan. Trying to talk someone out of thier opinion about it is like 'rasslin' a hog.
My personal belief is that SRS has done more good than harm for the retriever sports and their use of rubber ducks hasn't diminished my ability to use live flyers. I suspect that showing the non-hunting public the way we use ducks would eventually do exactly that. We've seen plenty of examples of the do-gooders taking away the rights of minorities like us based on public opinion. It's much easier to sell the concept of hunting to non-hunters than it is to sell the idea of killing a few hundred birds to demonstrate our dog's training. And BBG, that isn't a educational moment. You can't educate the huggers that it's cool to kill a bunch of ducks to run a HT or FT. They aren't going to get it. They are going to call Congressmen and start sending out petitions and doing everything they can to kill what we enjoy. It's kinda like those pigeon shoots. The average person (myself included) is going to have a hard time with killing a few thousand animals simply for fun. The difference is I'm not trying to stop people from doing it, I just chose not to participate. But you don't see pigeon shooters clamoring to show it on TV to the rest of the world. They are smart enough to know that perception is reality and too much attention will end thier sport for them.
But it amazes me how upset some here get about SRS and the fact that they and VS chose to use rubber ducks. I understand if you don't agree, but why be so angry? If you don't like it, don't support them. Life is too short to spend it pissed off about something like that. There's plenty in this world to be angry about. SRS using rubber ducks just doesn't seem to me to be one of them. One man's opinion.
